About Langtoft.Net

In 2003 Langtoft based business Cambrai Covers took part in the Yorkshire Forward funded Business Insight Scheme.

The scheme was created to look into the need for broadband internet services among small businesses and to ascertain whether small and especially rurally situated businesses were disadvantaged by lack of services that were available to their competitors.

Results of the investigation seemed to suggest that businesses without fast internet access were, indeed, at a disadvantage, and as no ADSL service was available in the village, a 512k satellite broadband was installed by Business Insight so that Cambrai Covers could continue to feed information back to the Business Insight team.

Once the staff had become familiar with their new broadband system they quickly realised that the same equipment could be used to provide fast internet connections for their whole village, but in reality it would be almost another two years before the technology and knowledge base would grow to the point that could be installed economically for home users.

We jump forward in time, to May 2004, when IT engineer Martyn Boswell was recruited to the Cambrai Covers team. Martyn was povided with private funding from Cambrai Covers with it the challenge to create a pilot wireless broadband network. The idea was to learn the technology that could then be used to provide Langtoft with Broadband Internet Access...

In June and July 2004 the project was joined by six Langtoft residents who generously agreed to be our 'Guineapigs'. The 'Langtoft Six' were all situated close to the first base station we set up at Apple Tree Works, and equipment was installed in their homes to receive the sigal and connect our satellite signal to their computers...

...and the result? SUCCESS!

Martyn found that his weeks of research and experimentation had paid off - our 'Six' were delighted and we were enthused with new energy to complete our project...Langtoft.Net was born...

We ran the six-subscriber network for three months, monitoring performance and 'tweaking' the programming, but in all honesty we had a stable and reliable network almost from the day we switched it on. Time to grow...

...to which end, in October 2004, we leafleted the whole village, inviting people to fill in a questionnaire and to attend our first public 'outing' at the Ship Inn, Langtoft. The response to the questionnaire was excellent, with more than 70 people saying they would be interested in receiving a broadband connection to their home or work place! Perhaps even better, the staff at the Ship prepared a great buffet - much to the enjoyment of our guests where just over 30 people watched our

'Internet Wars - Langtoft Strikes Back' video.
